Garrett Holden Captiva Turbocharger Failure
Preventative Care for your Holden Captiva Garrett Turbocharger
The Captiva is a mid size x-over SUV and the focus of this discussion is on the ZZ20 (2.0L) turbo-charged model.
And the ZZ20 diesel is originally equipped with an electronically-actuated Garrett GTB1549vk turbocharger.
This is a diesel variant, and the gasoline versions do not suffer Holden Captiva turbocharger failure as they are not turbocharged.
Both turbo and engine require uncontaminated oil to flow freely when in operation.
Lack of oil, uneven flow or contaminated oil, can at best lead to inefficient operation of the turbo and shorter life, and at worst complete failure of the turbocharger.
The usual way to prolong turbocharger life and help prevent failure is through regular maintenance as discussed in this article on Hyundai iLoads.
And the main points of that article are regular maintenance of the oil system, and the use of quality oils (fully synthetic is best).
But the same advice will help the Garrett Holden Captiva Turbocharger give years of efficient, trouble-free service.
Specifics to Help Avoid Garrett Holden Captiva Turbocharger Failure
However, the Captiva doesn’t suffer the same issues with injector seats, and seems to handle longer intervals between services than the iLoad.
The one thing to add for the Captiva would be this: there is a point in the turbo oil system that has the potential to become an obstruction to smooth oil flow.
There are bolts that connect the ends of the oil feed line to the turbocharger.
They are called ‘banjo’ bolts, and they have holes that allow oil through the body of the bolt and into the feed line.
Those original banjos have a hole that is too small and becomes too easily blocked.
Remedy this by replacing the original bolts with larger diameter bolts.
